Land Rover Warranty

Enquiry:Hi, does anyone have any experience of parts failing outside the 12 month warranty. My Freelander was fitted with a new IRD unit on 27/10/09 at 77,300 miles and at a cost of £2,431. The new IRD failed on 19th Jan 2011 after less than 15 months and 10,000 miles. Initally my garage thought the problem was the bearings so fitted new ones at a cost of £300; but these were also replaced at the same time as the IRD. My garage has my car and have given me a loan vehicle. They are claiming from the supplier who in turn is claiming from Landrover. We keep chasing the garage but they just tell us that these things take time and I feel that I am getting nowhere, see log below: 19/01/11 – AM - Car making noise while driving to work – to A&D - Bearings replaced at a cost of £296.85 19/01/11 – PM - Collected car - Still making noise 20/01/11 – AM - Took car back to A&D for investigation 21/01/11 – PM - A&D rang to say IRD unit had failed but car drivable - IRD unit replaced on 27/10/09 at cost of £2,431.65 - Less than 15 months and less than 10,000 miles - Also bearings, which were replaced on 19/01/11, were also replaced on 27/10/09 21/01/11 – PM - Collected car - A&D said that they would sort it out and order a new IRD unit 27/01/11 – AM - Called in to garage - Still waiting for IRD unit - Agreed to replace but asked that we pay for labour – mentioned bearings 5/02/11 – AM - Called for an update - Still waiting for IRD unit to come in 9/02/11 - Called garage, spoke to Chris, noise getting louder so not happy to drive car - Asked if I could drop car in Friday although part not in - Offered me a loan vehicle - Asked why part taking so long – told this is a warranty claim and these things take time - Said we’d been told part was on order – I thought this would be fitted and claim sorted out separately – he couldn’t comment - He asked if it was my warranty – no supplier warranty - Told me if noise was getting louder then I should bring it in 10/02/11 – PM - Andy called to confirm offer of loan vehicle until mine is fixed 11/02/11 – PM - Called into garage to leave car and collect loan vehicle - Claim against supplier who in turn claiming against the manufacturer - New IRD unit waiting at supplier 11/02/11 – PM - Called that evening - collating paperwork for claim; wanted MOT verifying mileage 12/02/11 MOT taken into A&D Should I take legal advice and should we go direct to Landrover. The part was obviously not fit for purpose. Any advice you can offer would be much appreciated. Many thanks Sarah Hewlett (Mrs) Somerset

Good grief

£2431 for an IRD unit??? OMG! They take about 1 - 2 hours to fit and are £745 + VAT! Trade they are half that price! And £300 for bearings? Good lord, they saw you coming before you left your house!! Do people not bother looking around for the best prices, try GOOGLE, it's an amazing internet search engine! If the garage said the bearings were the fault the second time, I'd want my money back from THEM, they mis-diagnosed the problem! As for the IRD unit, surely it would only have had a 12 months warranty anyway? Without seeing it or hearing it, I couldn't say, but, find a gravel track or car park, turn the steering on full lock, left or right, drive forward slowish and if one of the wheels slides or drags, then the IRD unit is on it's way or has gone. I'd seriously change your garage if I were you, the bearings for the IRD unit are only £17 +VAT (£42 + VAT for the good ones) and there are two of them, you were charged how much? To change a tranfer box(IRD unit) I charge £600 - £800, you really do need a garage that knows what the hell they're talking about.

Land Rover vs Mercedes

I had a Discovery 2 for 4 years. It gave me numerous problems in all sort of areas. The engine did work, but way too many pieces, systems and electrics were faulty in a random way. Door locks, air suspension, leaks, ECU cables, window seals noise, you name it. It did cost me a lot of money and spent a LOT of time because of it. Did I like the car? Yes. Did I enjoy the car when it worked? Yes. But it was like having a baby. You had to take care of it. You had to adapt your life to it. A friend of a friend was about to sell a 14 years old Mercedes G at quite a high price. And finally after some thought I bought it at twice the price of what I could sell my 7 years old disco. What a difference. Almost no corrossion, no problems at all. Only rear door had to be adjusted last year due rear spare wheel weight (after 14 years, and a 15 minute job). What a solid feel and solid reality. It may be way more expensive to buy, but certainly it will outlast Disco 3 and Disco 4 , and much cheaper to maintain, cos you only pay for maintenance, not for constant repairs. Too sad to see a brand unable to increase its quality, or indeed not even able to maintain it. Newer Mercedes probably are not as reliable now as they were some 15 or 20 years ago. And I may not buy another car in my life and keep the Merc G. Or at least if I change it will because I want. Not because it falls apart or lets me down !!. Very sad this Land Rover ADN thing....
